How would you define “success” in your life? One that makes my top of list is “Let Your Success Be Measured by How Much Fun You’re Having.” I’ve always been one to chase the next good time and while life takes different turns in the road the one constant I’ve truly enjoyed is spending time with people and working towards a goal. You may think I’m talking about career and climbing a corporate ladder or starting your business and many other leadership roles but today I share with you setting goals as a family. As a family, we enjoy experiences together. We recently took a vacation to Mexico and one of the experiences we had was deep sea fishing. We encountered some rough waters and (one of us) shared extra bait that came in the form of unsettled breakfast over the side of the boat (a little sea sick) but we did catch 9 fish - a very successful morning according to our Captain. To watch the smiles on my kids’ faces and to experience it together is something I’ll never forget. This is just one of many experiences we’ve had together. It’s a practice in our house to write down goals. Goals like experiences we want to have. And then to take steps in that direction to make those things happen. Here’s how we implement our goal setting in individual and family forms: At the beginning of each year we take a few minutes to share what our highs of the year were; it’s a good time to reflect and practice gratitude for what we’ve been able to do. I write these down in our family journal and place the name of each of us by our highs of the year. We then write down things we want to accomplish or improve on personally. Usually 3-5 things is plenty and younger kids 2-3. We have a mid-year check point to see how we are doing. And we share in open family settings in a supportive way. It’s a great practice to establish goal setting. And as a parent and adult leader in the family, we practice the use of a vision board. We include on our white board our short term goals, mid-term goals and long term goals that we want to achieve and experience. We write down things we want to purchase, places we want to go, personal achievements and vocation goals. These sit in our private space where we frequently if not daily are able to look at those goals. And then each day or week, we are taking a step towards those big dreams and goals. It’s not enough to focus on the destination and only hold happiness to the final goal. Life is a journey with some milestones and experiences along the way. Happy people are productive people. We create our life by design and not by default. All of this begins with feeling good and having the energy to experience a successful and fun lifestyle. Health and wellness is foundational to clarity and vision, the energy to take a step each day and the expansion to enjoy the journey along the way.
